As we count down the final days till International Convention 2023 in Dallas, I can’t seem to forget about how excited and overwhelmed I was during IC Baltimore as a first-time attendee. 

As I reflect on my last IC experience, here are the top five things I wish I had known before going. 

1. The convention center is going to be huge! 

There are people everywhere and so much to do. Take your time on the first day walking around with friends and taking in every spot, banner, and pop-up you see on BBYO boulevard.  Stop by the AZA and BBG lounge, see what programs are being offered, and figure out which dining rooms are where BEFORE the craze of meal time begins. In other words, stop and smell the roses when you have the chance, I promise it’ll be worth it. 

2. As cool as the mini backpacks are, they aren’t practical to carry around all day! 

Make sure you have a big enough backpack that can hold all your essentials, a portable charger, water bottle, sweatshirt, snacks, and an extra cowboy hat of course. 

3. Don’t be afraid to meet new people, so many people are waiting to meet you.

 I know how scary it can be walking into big groups and introducing yourself, but the best part of IC is the friendships and relationships you will build with people from all over the world.  Reach out to new faces, sit next to someone you don’t know at services, and join in people’s dance parties, you never know who might become a new best friend

4. Get involved in the spirit of IC, dress up for each themed day. 

My favorite part of IC is being able to walk around in onesies and nobody batting an eye, use the week as a way to unleash your biggest regional spirit, wear your region’s colors with pride, don’t worry about looking funny or “too much” because everyone will be doing the same thing.

5. Last but not least, don’t be afraid to take breaks.

 For every minute of fun IC is, don’t let yourself get worn out or you’ll miss the best parts. The late-night room memories are ones you’ll never forget, but make sure to get enough sleep to make it through the excitingness and opportunity of the day.
