One Year of BBYO
One year ago, I was a prospect walking around the JCC during intake night. I was making the decision of which chapter would be the best fit for me to spend the next couple of years with. I met amazing people who assured me that I had made the right choice. One year ago, I went to my first program as a prospect.
I attended this program with close friends and left with countless new friends. I can remember perfectly how it went, and directly after I registered for BBYO. For the rest of the fall term, I attended multiple fun and creative programs, sleepovers, and other activities. Coming back every Saturday to see my friends was such a great opportunity! Programs like Messy Night and Siblinghood were what brought me closer to the people that mattered most.
Eleven months ago, I decided that I wanted to be more involved. I ran for Sunshine Girl for my chapter board. I became a sunshine girl along with a friend I had joined my chapter with. 11 months ago, I went to a board retreat and bonded with my chapter board.
Eight months ago, I attended many more programs. I made even more new friends. I realized I wanted to be a larger part of my chapter. Eight months ago, I started preparing to run for my chapter’s Mazkirah.
Five months ago, I ran for Mazkirah. I put in a lot of effort to create a platform and speech to show why I wanted to become Mazkirah and why I was the best fit for the role. Five months ago, I lost the election and dropped down to Sunshine Girl for a second term. While I was a bit disappointed, I knew that this wouldn't stop me from having an even better sunshine term.
Two months ago, I went to the board retreat again. I learned and gathered ideas from other sunshine girls all over the council so I could make my term worthwhile and better than last. 2 months ago, I entered the new term more excited than ever and grateful that I had such an amazing chapter and chapter board.
Today, I write this just before going to yet another program. The past year has taught me so much while giving me friends and experiences for which I can only thank BBYO. Thank you, BBYO, BBG, and Galim, for something I love so much.
