The Power of North Star Nights
When I first joined BBYO, the programs that were offered were mainly chapter-based. I attended many programs with my chapter, Chabibi BBG #325, but only one per term with my council. This meant that I would only see the AZAs once or twice a year at BBYO events, and I didn’t know it then, but an amazing idea would soon change it all.
Last year, North Star Council began trying out a new form of programming, North Star Nights. These were much different than anything else the council had done before, as these nights were casual hangouts at the JCC instead of the elaborate kickoffs we had become accustomed to. Like all new things, it took some time to really get the ball rolling, but this idea ended up being the perfect way to bring both AZAs and BBGs together at events.
This year, I’ve had the privilege of being a member of the council board and taking some responsibility for helping to plan these crucial events. At our first North Star Night this year, we had a fall food event, and I noticed that although we had many chairs and tables set up for everyone, people wanted to stand so that they could talk to all their friends and strengthen their Jewish bonds. Something as simple as a chill BBYO hangout has had a tremendous impact on the Jewish community of the Twin Cities, bringing together many teens and giving everyone an excuse to get together after time apart.
As I continue through my last year in BBYO, I feel proud to know that my council has taken a tremendous step forward in bonding Jewish BBGs and AZAs and provided a space for Jewish teens to be comfortable during the school year. With many fun and meaningful Thursdays ahead, I cannot wait to see the amazing impact North Star Nights will continue to have on our blooming community.
